Jane

Well, it seems so silly to think about something that happened so long ago
but when you repress and fail to express how can you expect to let go
you can’t let go
you can’t let go
oh no

Jane was the first one
I ever laid eyes on
she smiled and my heart skipped a beat
down by the fountain
i scaled a small mountain
and mustered the courage to speak

Come take my hand
i wanna be your man
though i had no clue what it meant
no flowers, no letters, no cards
nothing was sent

How could I’ve known
that love could wither away
it needs to grow
if you should want it to stay
what could I’ve done
I was so young

Next thing that I knew
she said, “Can I talk to you?
I liked us better before.”
Though i saw it coming
there was no way to summon the words
and my heart hit the floor

I walked away
vowing one day
that I would win my woman back
I spent my summer counting the ways to attract her

But when September rolled around
I learned that she’d moved away
And the heart doesn’t make a sound
even though you know its in pain
Why does the first one you love
hurt for the worst?

How could I’ve known
that love could wither away
it needs to grow
if you should want it to stay
what could I’ve done
I was so young

Well, it seems so silly to think about something that happened so long ago
but when you repress and fail to express how can you expect to let go
you can’t let go
you can’t let go
oh no
